Question 1 - Current Events
Recently, colleges and universities have had to deal with controversial speakers being invited or disinvited to campus. Hardly a week goes by without a speaker being challenged over free speech which either creates a hostile learning environment or is politically controversial or contrarian. Where should we draw the line between protecting free speech on college campuses and protecting an inclusive learning environment?

Question 2 - UCLA Principles of Community
The Best We Could Do has been selected as the 2017-2018 UCLA Common Book

The Best We Could Do brings to life author Thi Bui’s search for a better future while longing for a simpler past. This beautifully illustrated and emotional story explores the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family.

Author Thi Bui describes her family’s immigration to San Diego, California as refugees during the Vietnam War. She writes, “I had never, before researching the background of my father’s stories, imagined that these horrible events were connected to my family history” (p. 116). What historical events are tied to your own family history? How and when did you learn about them? How does your family history shape your identity now?
